SPF = Sunburn radiation dose after sunscreen / Sunburn radiation dose without sunscreen

This calculation is based on applying 2 milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin surface.

For example, if skin covered with sunscreen will burn after 300 seconds of UV exposure, and skin without sunscreen will burn after 10 seconds of UV exposure, then the SPF value is 300 divided by 10, which equals 30.

SPF Measurement

• Wait 15 to 30 minutes and then use a sun simulator (with a special built-in UV source) for UV exposure. In a spectroradiometer, ultraviolet radiation of a specific wavelength can be generated to facilitate the measurement of radiation.
• Professional assessment of minimum erythema dose (MED) will be performed 16 to 24 hours after exposure (when the sunburn reaction reaches its peak).

Results Interpretation
