What Is Skin pH?
Skin surface pH is indicative of skin condition and health. Normal skin is weakly acidic and the surface pH is generally maintained at 4.5 to 6.5. Skin pH measurements can be used to assess the effect of various cosmetic products on the skin surface as well as to assess the status of acute or chronic skin diseases.
To avoid skin irritation, most cosmetic products on the market have a pH level that is consistent with the skin's physiological pH. Cleansing products may be neutral or weakly alkaline, and special care needs to be taken when applying them to avoid leaving them on the skin surface for too long.

Skin pH Measurement Methods
Skin hydrogen potential (pH) is a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions [H+] in a surface aqueous solution. Since skin is not an aqueous solution, and since the water-soluble components of the stratum corneum are extracted into the liquid interface between the skin and the pH measurement system, the measured skin surface pH is referred to as apparent pH.
Protheragen-ING utilizes specialized pH testing equipment to accurately measure pH. Skin apparent pH is most often measured using a skin pH meter. This instrument measures the pH of the skin based on changes in the H+ concentration on the skin surface.
We use two flat pH electrodes based on different electrode technologies, the Combination Flat Glass pH Electrode and the Ion Sensitive Field Effect Transistor (ISFET) pH Electrode. Apparent skin pH can be measured by applying 1 or 2 drops of deionized water or saline and placing a flat pH electrode on a wet surface.
