What Is the Refractive Index?

The refractive index (RI) is a dimensionless number that quantifies how much light bends as it travels through a particular medium. It provides information about the degree to which light changes direction or refracts when transitioning from one medium to another.

Why Measure the Refractive Index?

RI is a crucial parameter for characterizing the physical and chemical properties. This measurement is particularly valuable in assessing the mechanical strength of tablets.

How Is the Refractive Index Measured?

RI is determined using a refractometer, a specialized instrument designed for this purpose, first developed by Abbe in the nineteenth century.

It consists of two prisms, an illuminating prism and a refracting prism, with the sample positioned as a thin layer between these prisms.

As light from a source passes through the illuminating prism, it creates distinct light and dark areas on the back of the refracting prism. The Refractive Index value is then obtained by observing the boundary between these light and dark regions.
